
The Javanese term “Anggarebeg” has a meaning accompanying the king, or bridgeroom. I the past time there was a history told that the kings of Java laways conducted ceremony to save the palace every new year, an it was called rojowedo.
The objective of safety ceremony, that the essence of it was an animal sacrificial ceremony, was for God almighty gave protection, safety to the king, the kingdom and the people.
On that occasion, the people came to the king to deliver their loyalty and obedience. The history gave clues that in the past time, there was royal custom to held an animal sacrificial ceremony every new year. The ceremony was conducted ini Bangsal Manguntur Tangkil Located in Sitihinggil, meaning the land made higher in front of the palace.
Sunan Kalijogo knew that people like celebration, noisy related to ritual ceremony. Moreover, if the celebration was added with gamelan music, it was attracted people attention to come. Grebeg was a kind of traditional custom of kasultanan palace of Yogyakarta for the first time held by the first sultan, that was Sultan Hamengkubuwono I.
Grebeg was a ceremony of kingdom that involving all members of kingdom, every officer of kingdom, from lower up to highest level, all society and an obergation for kolonial government to part in. grebeg had a religious nature, because it was commuted with the birthday of Nabi Muhammad, and also both of islamic big days. In the seven decades this century, grebeg was held from year to year attractively by bring back to live Sekaten tradition in North Square.
